Few books hold a candle to it with in the fantasy genre, but then again, it requires the reader to put more than his thinking cap on to understand it. If you are not as learned as the author-an award winning PhD scholar, then have google or a good old fashioned dictionary or encyclopedia handy, because you're going to need it. On the other hand, some of the meso-american inspiration is so completely in-universe, that you just have to pick up the speech via inference. In either way the language, and ambiance alone is enough to draw you in. Better still the chapters are well planned, so its a perfect book to read while waiting in line for a coffee at a crowded coffee bar, book in one hand, smart phone in the other (to look stuff up). If anything it is just mind blowing how much more educated fantasy authors were 40 years ago, compared to the fanfic hacks of our present age. Of course now that I've said that, I'm sure the hatred will fly. So be it. I love this book.Product details

A great novel about the intricate politics and intrigues on the science fantasy world of Tekumel. A beautiful, rich, and exotic setting well worth exploring.
Not as good as Flamesong, but great for those who want a vision of Tekumel (an RPG game world). Nice, if plodding, story. The author recently passed and those of us who love his works will miss him. I read this every few years and hope it will make its way to .
The prose isn't always the easiest, but for sheer inventiveness, for fantasy that is worlds away from the usual LOTR/GoT retreads, this really delivers
M.A.R. Barker is an amazing author whose world of Tekumel is every bit as depthy as Tolkien's Middle Earth. The setting is one of science fantasy. It's thoroughly enjoyable and the language used is almost as rich as that of Clark Ashton Smith. Barker is one of my favorite authors of all time.
The story and characters drew me in. I wanted to know more. There were more than a few times when I had to force myself to put the book down so I could get something done around the house or even to go to bed.
I have love this author and the RPG that he developed. This is a well written book that gives tremendous insight into an incredibly complex society developed by the author. If anything I would love to see the other books written about this world made available for kindle as well. (Strong Hint)
If anyone is not familiar with EPT it is a contemporary of the original D&D and has a wonderful intricate back story.
This story is really entertaining and hard to put down after you begin.
M.A.R. Barker is sometimes referred as the american Tolkien or the forgotten Tolkien. The world he created with it's mixture of Mayan and Indian/Pakistani cultures is very unusual for a fantasy novel. This is very refreshing. The typical setting tropes one finds in fantasy novels can be so cookie cutter that many fantasy stories could very easily take place in another's setting. Barker, on the other hand, delivers an alternate setting so far removed from any other fantasy setting and deeply immerses the reader into his creation. Language, culture, races, high-level intrigue, and religion are all present and not what one would expect.
